Everyone's a little bit Nazi

I'm a Nazi, you're a Nazi, we're all Nazis. More and more these days the way to express your disagreement with someone else's views is to call them a Nazi. Janeane Garofalo has decided that ink stained fingers is Nazish. Paying tribute to our fighting men and women of past and present is Nazish. Those who died on September 11, 2001 as the result of terrorists crashing civilian airliners into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field were Nazis.

Do people even have a clue about who the real Nazis were any more? Do they remember what they did? Or do they not care? Just in case you don't know here's Wikipedia's description:

Nazism (abbreviated from the German: Nationalsozialismus, "National Socialism") or also called Hitlerism is a type of fascist/totalitarian ideology. The term is most often used in connection with the dictatorship of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945 (the "Third Reich"). This ideology was held by the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, commonly called NSDAP or the Nazi Party), which was led by its führer Adolf Hitler. Adherents of Nazism held that the German nation and the purported "Aryan" race were superior to other races. Nazism has been outlawed in modern Germany, although remnants and revivalists, known as "Neo-Nazis," continue to operate in Germany and abroad.

Lest we forget, the Nazis were, and still are, real. They were evil. They killed people and still would if they ever gained any real influence today. The Nazis imprisoned and killed millions. Deviation from the Nazi ideals landed people in concentration camps. They had Europe in flames. We had to fight a war to stop them.

When we remember who the Nazis really were and what they really did those who call people that they merely disagree with Nazis look stupid. Throwing around the label Nazi is intellectual laziness. It indicates an unwillingness to seriously evaluate an opposing view point. It also disrespects and clouds the memory of those who died at the hands of real Nazis.

The philosophers I know have a rule. In any discussion when someone calls someone else a Nazi the discussion ends. The person who made the accusation looses the argument. I think that's a good rule.
